- Rangpur Rangers have a better batting line-up going into the game and apart from Watson all batsmen have got runs.
- Mustafizur Rahman has been in great form with the ball and among the leading wicket takers and can win the game for his side.
- Sylhet Thunder has won just one in their nine games so far and the team looks in dismal form at the moment.
It is the 32nd game of the Bangladesh Premier League where Sylhet Thunder will be up against the Rangpur Rangers. It has been a forgettable season for the Thunder as they have managed just one win so far in nine games. They have tried all kinds of combinations even to the extent of changing their captain but things just haven’t worked for them. The inability to play well as a unit has cost them in most of the games.
Rangpur Rangers have had to deal with inconsistency a bit in the tournament but have overall competed well in the season. They had defeated Sylhet Thunder by a big margin earlier in the season and would be looking forward to carrying that confidence in the next game. The Rangers must win this one to keep their hopes alive for a playoff berth and it will be interesting to see how they approach the game.
Their loss in the Super Over in the last game against the Cumilla Warriors best summarizes the kind of tournament the side has had. Having almost sealed the game the side went down failing to hold their nerves. Andre Fletcher who took over the captaincy from Mosaddek Hossain wasn’t able to make much of a difference in the end as the side ended all its hopes of making it to the playoffs.
The side would need its openers Rony Talukdar and Johnson Charles to fire at the top as this is the area where the side has failed in the last two games. Sherfane Rutherford hasn’t done well for his reputation and the team needs a good innings from him. Sohag Gazi did well in the last game but the likes of Fletcher and Nazmul Hossain Milon must focus on building partnerships against a good bowling line-up that Rangpur Rangers have.
Bowling attack did well in the last game with Naveen-ul-Haq and Ebadot Hossain bowling well. The pair has done a decent job this season. Rutherford and Sohag Gazi’s good show in the last game would make the team management happy. With their batsmen not in the best of form the bowlers need to assume extra responsibility in the next game.
Andre Fletcher, Sohag Gazi and Johnson Charles will be the players that Sylhet Thunder will bank on the most in the next game.
It was a bad loss for Shane Watson’s side in the last game against Rajshahi Royals just when the side seemed to have found its mojo. It was their inability to build partnerships that saw them going down in the game. The side still has a chance of making it to the playoffs and a win here would help their cause. With the Thunder struggling at the moment Watson would want his players to rise to the occasion and register a big win that improves their net run rate.
Shane Watson has had a horrible season with the bat with single digit scores in all games so far. He will need to provide the team with a good start alongside Mohammad Naim. Cameron Delport and Tom Abell make the batting stores with good hitters of the ball like Fazle Mohammad and Mohammad Nabi down the order. They will need to focus on building partnerships an area where the side has failed.
Mustafizur Rahman has had a great season so far picking wickets in almost all games. He will need to focus on picking wickets with the new ball in company of Arafar Sunny. In Nabi and Taskin Ahmed the side has two experienced bowlers. Their bowlers need to focus in exploiting the weakness that Sylhet have in their batting at the moment.
Mohammad Nabi, Cameraon Delport and Shane Watson would be the players to watch out for in this game.
The side batting second at this venue has won more games in evening games. The venue is infamous for its evening dew where the side bowling second finds it extremely difficult to grip the ball. With the dew factor kept in mind we expect the side winning the toss inviting the opposition to bat first.
PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS
The pitch at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet would be a tricky one to bat on given the dew factor. We have seen the odd ball stop on the batsmen and where playing shots isn’t as easy as we have seen in the other venues in this tournament. Bowlers who bowl at the right areas would get their rewards as this isn’t the track where the batsmen can push up the scoring easily. Spinners are likely to find it hard to bowl here once the ball starts getting wet.
There would be heavy cloud cover over Sylhet on the day of the game with the weatherman predicting light showers. At the start of the game the mercury would drop to 18° C with the northern breeze making it feel colder. There would be 88% humidity on the day of the game with the wind conditions being normal.
The Sylhet Thunder has gone from one loss to another this season. At this point of time the side seems to be struggling with a confidence issue which was on full display in the last game. This is the reason we feel they aren’t likely to win the next game. They will have the crowd supporting them and it will be interesting to see if it will make a difference.
Rangpur Rangers on the other hand have also had their own struggles especially with the consistency of their batsmen. Having defeated the Thunder by a big margin previously in the tournament they would start confidently. The side has to get it right with its batting performance as they have a good bowling attack.
It is only a misadventure on their part that can lead to Rangpur Rangers losing the game. They will have to guard against complacency and shall start as favourites to win this game.
