- Khulna Tigers have dipped in their performance over the last 5 games.
The 40th match of the Bangladesh Premier League 2019-20 will be played between Cumilla Warriors and Khulna Tigers at Dhaka. BPL 2019-20 is heading towards its final stages and the competition is touching its peak. There is still a tough fight going on between the teams to qualify for the play-offs of the ongoing tournament.
The upcoming game will be important from the perspective of Cumilla Warriors and Khulna Tigers as both of them are still in contention. Tigers have got Mehidy Hasan, Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw in their ranks and will bank on them in the crucial match against the Warriors.
Cumilla Warriors have to win all the remaining games if they want to qualify for the semi-finals and they have the firepower in their side that can help them in the upcoming games. They have the services of Dawid Malan, Soumya Sarkar and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who can help their side in winning the match against Khulna Tigers. There is no doubt about the fact that the form of their high-profile players makes them the favorites in the next game.
Dawid Malan has re-joined the Warriors after attending his ill wife in England. The southpaw is currently the leading run-scorer of this BPL with 377 runs at an average of 62.83. Upul Tharanga scored 45 runs in his very first match and he along with Malan can form a dangerous opening duo.
Soumya Sarkar has 246 runs and his role in the middle-order will be key. The stand-in skipper also has 11 wickets to his name. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Al-Amin Hossain, Sunzamul Islam have played key roles as well. David Wiese has gone for a few though. Sabbir Rahman isn’t in the best of form. If Tharanga and Van Zyl can fire at the top of the order, however, the Warriors can keep their play-off hopes alive.
Mujeeb tops the billing when it comes to their overseas stars, however – his 13 wickets in nine matches so far putting him two ahead of all-rounder and captain Soumya Sarkar. The Afghan twirl man’s economy rate of just 4.91 runs per over is outstanding too.
Khulna Tigers lost both matches in Sylhet, suffering defeats to Dhaka Platoon and Chattogram Challengers. They pushed the former close, as Mushfiqur Rahim hit a half-century, but they could only reach 160/8 as they chased 173 to win.
Hashim Amla opened the batting last time out, but Mohammad Amir was absent. There could be more changes for this game as Khulna Tigers look to get back to winning ways.
Their batting let them down last time out, however – only three players (Rahim, Rilee Rossouw and Robbie Fylinck) reach double figures and they were carted for 121. Chattogram Challengers then eased to a six-wicket win.
Mushfiqur is the only batsman currently performing consistently for Khulna. Other batsmen are not consistent and Cumilla’s sharp bowling unit can take that chance.
The team which wins the toss will choose to field first as chasing will be easy considering the amount of the dew which has fallen at this venue.
Average first innings score: 163 [In the last six games at the venue this season]
Record of chasing teams: 3 out of 6 [ At this venue]
PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS
The pitch at Shere Bangla Stadium is expected to offer some turn to the spinners and the batsmen will find it difficult to smash them across the park. On the other hand, the fast bowlers will have to hit in the right areas to get wickets otherwise they will get hit for runs very easily.
Cumilla Warriors will look to continue their resurgent form as they bid to pull clear of Khulna Tigers and take a step closer to the Bangladesh Premier League 2019-20 play-offs.
Cumilla have won their last three consecutive matches, although the last two were against out-of-form Sylhet Thunder. They needed a super over to win the first of those, after initially throwing away a winning position, but Soumya Sarkar’s half-century earned victory outright last time out.
Khulna Tigers, on the other hand, have let their grip on the play-off places slip with two consecutive defeats. They still have ten points, level with Cumilla Warriors, but they have lost their momentum and were bowled out for 121 against Chattogram Challengers last time out.
Rilee Rossouw and Mushfiqur Rahim are also expected to play good knocks in the next game. Mujeeb Ur Rahman is also expected to play a vital role in bowlers’ category, who has taken 13 wickets in 10 games.
